Official Blurb:

It was supposed to be the perfect reunion: six university friends together again after twenty years. Host Ali finally has the life she always wanted, a career she can be proud of and a wonderful family with her college boyfriend, now husband. But that night her best friend makes an accusation so shocking that nothing will ever be the same again.
When Karen staggers in from the garden, bleeding and traumatised, she claims that she has been assaulted—by Ali’s husband, Mike. Ali must make a split-second decision: who should she believe? Her horrified husband, or her best friend? With Mike offering a very different version of events, Ali knows one of them is lying—but which? And why?
When the ensuing chaos forces her to re-examine the golden era the group shared at university, Ali realises there are darker memories too. Memories that have lain dormant for decades. Memories someone would kill to protect.

My Thoughts:

I decided to take a chance on this book as I received it free with Amazon Prime. I had never read anything by this author before nor did I look at any of the reviews; I just dived in!
I was a little unsure, to begin with; the style of writing was a little different to what I’m used to. It was quite sharp and to the point. None of the characters seemed to like each other, and I thought, in turn, I wouldn’t like them either.
However, once I got into the flow of the book, it really gripped me. I got used to Ali’s voice and was intrigued to see where the story would go.
Ali is hosting a reunion for her and her husband’s university friends. However, there are so many secrets and undertones; you wonder why these people are still friends. I can’t imagine being like this with my uni friends. We too have known each other for 23 years (so two less than this group) but we love catching up, and our conversations flow smoothly and naturally.
The night of the reunion takes a sinister turn, and you are left not knowing who to believe. As all of the secrets start to unravel and be revealed, the story becomes very intricate and problematic. It is all resolved slowly, and I didn’t see the end coming.
The chapters are interspersed with recollections of an event in 1996. There are also sections covering how each person that was present at the reunion is either coping with what happened or revealing a little bit more of the puzzle.
It was all very brilliantly brought together, and the story was developed at the perfect pace. Nothing is left unsaid, and it is all easy to follow.
A great read and I will be looking up further books from this author!
