Merry Me - Frankie Love

Reading Challenge Category: Christmas Book

Official Blurb:

I first met Holly when we were sixteen years old.
She was sugar, I was an effed up version of spice.
I wasn’t good enough for her — but damn how I wanted her.
Heartbreaking circumstances pulled us apart and it’s been years since I’ve seen her angelic face.
But I could never forget her.
She was my first kiss and I want her to be my last.
When I come back in town, things have changed — she’s moved on.
But I have one intention — prove to her I can be the mountain man she needs.
I’m holding out for more than a Christmas miracle.
I’m going to get myself a Christmas bride.

My Thoughts:

I’m sorry, but I didn’t enjoy this short story.
The whole way through I felt like I was missing out on a back story. The characters, Holly and Hunter, have a history and when he returns to claim her, it sends her life into a spin. There was undoubtedly a past between them, but we are not really privy to it. I kept expecting for everything to become clear and for us to be in the loop, but it never really happened. We don’t really find anything out and are just given empty excuses and vague responses. Other than Hunter feeling like Holly’s father didn’t think he was good enough for her, there was no additional depth to the reason he left her behind and didn’t look back until now. Holly accepts the flat and meaningless excuses way too quickly and easily; the whole story felt rushed.
I know it was only a short story, but there was nothing to it, yet for only 41 pages, it certainly dragged.
All the dialogue and thoughts were cluttered with cheesy metaphors and obvious comments. There was nothing original about this story nor the characters. The cherry on the top was the cliche ending. So, not a great offering to the Flirt Club Christmas collection, certainly only a one-star read.
