Everyone thinks they know me… but they’re wrong.Fearless on the outside— a lie. I’m a fraud, hiding behind a mask of perfection. My reality very different. The captain. The leader. The Queen Bee. None of it real— all just an illusion. Perception is everything and I use it to get what I want, when I want, refusing to let anyone stand in my way. Until he shows me that he’s not the man I expected. He’s not just the quiet one... the innocent one. But the one to finally tear away the mask and look beneath the surface. The only one who sees me, gets me, challenges me. He’s already changed my life in a way I never expected. My secret could make us or break us, but I know one thing for sure... I’ll protect it fiercely. That’s the real me. Chelsea Fierce. The girl behind the mask with everything to lose.
So, I was really looking forward to Shane and Chelsea’s story. Their background input in the last three books was rather profound, so they definitely deserved a book of their own to find out what was going on and why they were doing those things. However, I have to say, I was a little disappointed with the outcome and it wasn’t what I’d hoped for. I know I am in the minority with this opinion, having looked at the reviews left already. I just expected to really root for the bad guy, to have fireworks and be blown away by these characters. Chelsea was written like any other female protagonist, she had lost her fight and bitchiness, and the author had tried too hard to make her innocent. There was nothing unique left about her. I wanted the Chelsea that we’d seen glimpses of in the previous books. I was really hoping we’d skip back in time slightly to see what was going through her mind when she did what she did to Amelie and Mason. However, we don’t go back in time we go forward to after her ‘rehabilitation’. Whilst away, she’d had an enlightenment and changed her ways and just wants to get her head down and get on with life while snagging her man at the same time. It was slightly dull. Don’t get me wrong there is plenty of drama, and if these characters hadn’t have been previously introduced as something else then this would have made for a perfectly good story, and I would have liked the characters. I just can’t emphasise enough how I wanted so much more from Chelsea’s personality and what a change it would have made to read about a bitch rather than a nice girl! The ending, for me, dragged as well. I feel like it could have ended about five chapters earlier, but it just kept going, and I felt bored trying to get it finished. So, I’m afraid this isn’t one of my favourite Tracy Lorraine books. I’m struggling with how many stars to give it, my head is saying two, but my heart is going to go with three as I think the problem I have with it is my issue and not the quality of the book itself. Plus I know my opinion on this is going to be controversial. Such a shame as I’d just read the Lockdown spin-off to this world and was really excited to delve back in with two main characters.
