Official Blurb:

Susan has everything she ever wanted. A loving husband, an angelic daughter and the cottage of her dreams in County Cork. Her picture-perfect life seems too good to be true. And it is.
At a housewarming party with their new neighbours, her daughter Amelia goes missing. As friends become suspects, Susan’s life spirals out of control. And when Amelia’s yellow cardigan is dredged from the lake, every parent’s worst nightmare suddenly seems horribly real.
In the aftermath of Amelia’s disappearance Susan and her husband Paul are not themselves. Someone is hiding something. What if Susan and Paul’s entire relationship was built on lies stretching back years?
Some secrets may be best left buried in the past, but uncovering the truth could be the only way to find Amelia – before it’s too late.

My Thoughts:

I am so confounded by this book; it has left me in a bit of a quandary. The whole way through I was hooked, I was grabbing every possible spare minute yesterday to get this read. My head was turned by the big twist about 50% of the way in. I just needed to know why everything was happening and what was the plan. Up until about 90% in, this was undoubtedly a five-star read. However, then the last 10% happened. I was left not really understanding what had happened or why. It was left with questions and unfinished plots. There were plot holes all over the place, and nonsensical things had happened. It fell down so fast I was left wondering what on earth I’d just read.
I understand that sometimes books can end abruptly, or on a slight cliffhanger. These are meant to keep you thinking long after you’ve finished the book, but this isn’t what happened here. It was badly brought together to finish off. The author obviously wanted twist after twist to shock the reader, but they weren’t very well executed and were there really just for the sake of it, and they didn’t feel very well thought out.
If it hadn’t have been for the first 90% gripping me, this would have slid down to a two-star read. I’m going to meet it slightly in the middle with three stars.
So, for the majority of the book, you are in suspense. You are not sure which characters to like and which to despise. The ‘Then’ chapters, at first, seem disjointed and you wonder what they have to do with the story, but as everything is made clear, they are very cleverly interwoven into the ‘now’ chapters. I was very impressed with how everything was unfolding and how invested you are made to feel in the story. I think this is why the ending is such a letdown. Just nothing made sense. I’d even consider that the end had been written by a completely different author who had only been given the premise of the book and hadn’t actually read it. That’s how little sense everything at the end made.
Oh well, I received this book via Kindle Reading so at least I didn’t waste good money on it. I definitely wouldn’t recommend it as the ending is just too frustrating and I suppose this is contradictory to the stars I’m giving it. Like I say this book confounded me!
