She thinks the island will keep her safe—she is wrong.
Traumatised by the death of a child in her care, top London paediatrician Claire seeks refuge on remote Selkie Island in the wilds of the Irish Sea with her husband Daniel and their baby daughter Kitty. Hidden away in Daniel’s old family home, Claire hopes to be as cut off from her guilt as she is from the mainland, but can she find peace in a place so full of its own secrets?
Twenty years earlier, Daniel’s parents left the island in a boat and never made it to the mainland. Mystery surrounds their deaths—and their lives. Why did they set out late at night in a storm? What had really been going on at the house? Even as Claire begins to recover her sense of self amid the island’s rugged beauty, she can’t shake off a chilling suspicion that Selkie Island has a dark history that the locals just can’t face—and that it somehow has a connection to her own life.
When baby Kitty suddenly disappears, Claire’s fragile world falls apart. The only way to secure her future is to uncover the past, but the closer she gets to answers, the more danger she finds herself in. Will she be able to save her family or will the island’s dark secrets take another life?

My Thoughts:

Caroline Mitchell's “The Islanders” offered an electrifying escape into the depths of mystery and suspense. This is the second book I've read on a remote island in the space of a few weeks, so I embarked on this one with a hint of trepidation. However, I quickly found myself ensnared by a narrative that was nothing short of exhilarating.
From the very first page, Mitchell's storytelling prowess is evident. Her prose is laden with suspense, and she masterfully weaves a web of intrigue that keeps you guessing. As I delved deeper into the story, I couldn't help but marvel at the author's ability to create an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty.
What truly sets “The Islanders” apart is its unexpected twists and turns. I pride myself on being a seasoned reader, often anticipating the plot's direction, but this book left me pleasantly confounded. The identity of 'The Islander' was a revelation that I never saw coming. Mitchell skilfully keeps you on your toes, and just when you think you have it all figured out, she throws in a curveball that leaves you reeling.
One of the aspects that I particularly admired was the way the story unfolded. Mitchell has a talent for providing just enough information to keep you intrigued but not overwhelmed. The gradual unravelling of the mystery is a testament to her skill as a writer. I had found myself suspecting every character, yet when the first significant twist occurred, a cascade of revelations suddenly fell into place. It was a moment of sheer brilliance, making all the earlier nuances in the story coalesce into a coherent whole.
“The Islanders” is a rollercoaster of suspense, taking you on a wild ride of emotions. It's a testament to Caroline Mitchell's ability to craft a story that keeps you glued to the page, eagerly turning to the next chapter to discover what lies ahead. It's the kind of book that has you reading late into the night, unable to put it down until you've uncovered all its secrets.
In every sense, “The Islanders” proved to be a captivating and edge-of-your-seat read, delivering an adrenaline rush of suspense that gripped me from start to finish. Caroline Mitchell has once again demonstrated her mettle as a master of the thriller genre, and this book is a shining example of her storytelling prowess.
