Official Blurb:

A loving mother. A perfect family. A shock wave that could shatter everything.
Freya Braithwaite knows she is lucky. Nineteen years of marriage to a man who still warms her soul and two beautiful teenage daughters to show for it: confident Charlotte and thoughtful Lexi. Her home is filled with love and laughter.
But when Lexi’s struggles with weight take control of her life, everything Freya once took for granted falls apart, leaving the whole family with a sense of helplessness that can only be confronted with understanding, unity and, above all, love.
In this compelling and heart-wrenching new work by bestselling author Amanda Prowse, one ordinary family tackles unexpected difficulties and discovers that love can find its way through life’s darkest moments.

My Thoughts:

This book took me by surprise as I wasn’t expecting it to be about anorexia from the blurb. I expected it to be about an overweight girl who struggled to lose weight. However, instead it was a much more harrowing a read and in some places quite hard going, but it was very beautifully written. You really felt the parents anguish at not being able to help Lexi and their world’s falling apart around them. I’ve never thought too deeply about anorexia other than people starving themselves because they believe themselves too fat and I know it can be about control as well.
However, when Lexi says she believes she is absorbing calories from the air, that blew me away as there must be people out there that think this. I am an avid calorie counter, and it’s my main go-to diet and I could see how it could become obsessive as I am a control freak (fortunately I love chocolate way too much to ever stop eating) but to think that I could be consuming calories when not putting something in my mouth would never even cross my mind as it is unfathomable.
The timeline in the book is quite difficult to keep up with as it jumps around with Freya reminiscing about Lexi’s childhood and there is also the countdown to you don’t know what. It is this countdown that keeps you intrigued, to begin with, though, as you want to know is Lexi ok? Overall, a really good book, that covers a heart wrenching and hard-hitting topic.
