My Evil Mother - Margaret Atwood

Reading Challenge Category: Free from Amazon Prime

Official Blurb:

Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed. But as the daughter of this bewitching homemaker comes of age and her mother’s claims become more and more outlandish, she begins to question everything she once took for granted.

My Thoughts:

I needed a short book to end the year, and this one won the competition!
I had no preconceptions and hadn’t even read the blurb. I got it free with Amazon Prime and started to read.
It is a very bizarre book, but I wouldn’t really expect anything different from this author. It really has you guessing on where this book is going. It doesn’t really ‘go’ anywhere, but it is a whole story of how one girl comes to terms with her mother’s actions and even sees her come full circle with her own daughter.
I did feel the daughter’s feelings towards her mother were a bit skewed, and she was a bit unfair to her. Even the title of the book suggests something that the mother was not.
It was a fun, light read, though and certainly filled that gap I had in the last few hours of the year when I wanted to read but didn’t have time for anything longer.
