Girl A - Abigail Dean

Reading Challenge Category: Just fancied reading

Official Blurb:

‘Girl A,’ she said. ‘The girl who escaped. If anyone was going to make it, it was going to be you.’
I am Lex Gracie: but they call me Girl A.
I grew up with my family on the moors.
I escaped when I was fifteen years old.
NOW SOMETHING IS PULLING ME BACK…

My Thoughts:

This is definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year!
It is one of those books that will stay in your mind for a while after reading. It was superbly written, and the story was captivating.
I’m a big fan of the early Virginia Andrews books (Flowers in the Attic, Heaven), and this felt like a modern version of one of those. Whenever a reference to the modernity of the setting came up, like the father going to B&Q, it always felt like a shock as I felt like this was set a long time ago. I think the fact that it was set in recent times made it all that more hard-hitting.
There are quite a few shockers towards the end, and they are the kind that makes you stop and reread what you had just read. I just couldn’t get my head around some of the things; they were just so terrible.
I didn’t know much about this book when I went into it; the book blurb is kept very brief. Due to this, I could just sit back and enjoy the book and let it tell me its story.
An absolutely fantastic book, and I am looking forward to this author’s next book later this year. A top five-star read.
