My Thoughts:

As a fervent follower of Angela Marsons' gripping DI Kim Stone series, diving into "Fatal Promise" was like reuniting with old friends after a period of turmoil. This ninth instalment picks up seamlessly from the heart-wrenching conclusion of the eighth book, plunging us into the emotional aftermath faced by Kim and her steadfast team. The continuity between the two books adds a unique depth, making this entry particularly compelling.
I've always had a bit of a gripe about Kim's seemingly random suspect revelations towards the climax of the stories. It often felt like she plucked names out of thin air, leaving me somewhat bewildered. This time, however, I approached the narrative with a determined eye, keen to unravel the mystery before Kim did. To my immense satisfaction, I succeeded! Identifying the obscure culprit early on transformed my usual frustration into a triumphant moment. The fact that I managed to beat Kim at her own game added an extra layer of enjoyment to the reading experience.
Marsons' skill in weaving a complex plot remains unmatched. The narrative is dense with tension and emotion, reflecting the raw wounds that the characters are grappling with. Each member of Kim's team is portrayed with intricate detail, and their coping mechanisms are laid bare for the reader to empathise with.
The book’s pacing is impeccable, with each twist and turn meticulously crafted to keep you on the edge of your seat. The interplay between Kim and her colleagues is as dynamic as ever, filled with the familiar blend of camaraderie and professional tension that fans of the series have come to love.
