Official Blurb:

Jon Talbot is a history professor who makes sense of the past by examining facts. He also knows how to speculate about the what-ifs. Jon’s doing both following the death of his wife, Pax. Driving home late from a volunteer assignment, she plunged off a mountain highway and died. The police find nothing suspicious about the facts: a deer in the road, a blown tire, a broken neck. But the what-ifs are leading Jon down a twisting trail of secrets. After five years of marriage, he is finally getting to know his wife.

My Thoughts:

For a 77-page book, this certainly didn’t feel rushed or lacking in any way! I actually felt like I was completely invested in the story and was surprised by how rounded it was.
We get to know Jon, the protagonist, on a personal level while he is trying to find out what happened to his wife the night she died. The book isn’t lacking in characteristics for Jon; we know how he thinks, what he enjoys and what emotions he is going through.
The book is also rather descriptive, something that is usually missing from short crime novels. This one seemed to get the balance just right.
I think I picked a great book as an insight into this author’s writing style without committing myself to something longer. However, I will certainly now be trying one of his full-length novels. This was a pleasant surprise of a book and quite unique to anything I’ve read recently. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever read a book about a professor using his skills to hunt criminals before!
