Beautiful: A beautiful girl. An evil man. One inspiring true story of courage - Katie Piper
Reading Challenge Category: a memoir, biography, or book of creative nonfiction
Official Book Blurb:
'I heard a horrible screaming sound, like an animal being slaughtered ... then I realised it was me.' When Katie Piper was 24, her life was near perfect. Young and beautiful, she was well on her way to fulfilling her dream of becoming a model. But then she met Daniel Lynch on Facebook and her world quickly turned into a nightmare ... After being held captive and brutally raped by her new boyfriend, Katie was subjected to a vicious acid attack. Within seconds, this bright and bubbly girl could feel her looks and the life she loved melting away. Beautiful is the moving true story of how one young woman had her mind, body and spirit cruelly snatched from her and how she inspired millions with her fight to get them back.
I don’t think any words could do justice to how moving and emotional this book was. I chose this book because I am petrified of this happening, not by someone I know, obviously, but by a stranger in a city. It has become such a frequent occurrence of late, especially in London that it is terrifying, and I, unfortunately, have let this terror affect me. We went to London to see Ricky Gervais, and I couldn’t bring myself to stay and enjoy a weekend there as I am petrified of the city. So reading this book and Katie’s account of how her life was destroyed by a man she had known and dated for only two weeks is heart-breaking. I had to keep reminding myself that this story was real, it really happened and just ten years ago and to such a hopeful, alive, young spirited girl. She has done so tremendously well to overcome all the difficulties that that life-changing event threw at her, and she is beautiful still! The doctors have worked miracles! She is an inspiration to everyone, but she should never have had to go through this in the first place, but unfortunately, there are truly evil people in the world.
