Trafficked: The Diary of a Sex Slave is a gritty, gripping, and tear-jerking fictional novella, inspired by real victims' accounts and research into the sex trafficking underworld. It's been listed as one of the Top 40 Books About Human Rights by Accredited Online Colleges.
It is estimated that 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders every year - 80% of these are women and girls. (Source: U.S. Department of State, Trafficking in Persons Report: 2007)

My Thoughts:

This is a very powerful read, and although the author advises that it is fiction, it feels genuine and authentic.
Just reading it had me feeling very anxious and as trapped as the protagonist was. She just seemed to be in such an impossible situation, and knowing that this is happening all over the world is truly horrific.
It is a very short book (only 96 pages) so can be read in one sitting; however, this doesn’t stop it packing a punch. We are following primarily just one girl, Elena, who was looking for a better life but ended up being exploited and living through the cruellest type of hell.
She does get to speak to some of the other sex workers who tell her their stories and experiences as well, but it doesn’t really look at the big picture. It is called ‘A Diary of a Sex Slave’ so you would expect it to be focused on just one girl, and it is.
I thought this was very well written; it had the right balance of wanting to be hard-hitting but not off-putting to read. You really felt for the characters, and I was totally invested in Elena’s outcome.
A real hard-hitting and gritty read!
