The Road - Cormac McCarthy
Reading Challenge Category: a book you can read in a day
Official Book Blurb:
A father and his young son walk alone through burned America, heading slowly for the coast. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. They have nothing but a pistol to defend themselves against the men who stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food - and each other.
I was quite enjoying this book until the end! I really hoped I would find it gripping with needing to read it in a day, and wouldn’t want to put it down and come back to it a different day. It certainly gripped me, I wanted to find out how they coped and what would happen to them and it compelled me to keep on reading. The lack of chapters also certainly helped with the not being able to put it down as I couldn’t say “I will just read to the end of the chapter” as there weren’t any and so I just keep reading.
However, then the dad died, and I was really upset. It was really sad but then what on earth happened???? I had to read the last two pages twice, and I still haven’t got a clue! The son just goes off with a bunch of strangers and takes their word that they are the good guys after they have mistrusted everyone for years and years!?! Huh, what?!? Did I miss something? I think I need to watch the film to see if that explains it any better because I hate books that just end and don’t explain anything, but then again I hate films that do that too, so if the film does it also I will not be best pleased! UPDATE - the film ends the same way, so I still have no clue as to why he did that or what the author was thinking!
