My Thoughts:

I have fond memories of reading this book when I was younger. I don’t remember any specifics just how exciting they used to be. I remember there being a tree, obviously and I had a vague memory of some kind of market at the top of it. My husband had read them too, and he said he remembers them being a little frightening as they were always finding themselves in dangerous situations.
So, I was excited to add this to this year’s reading challenge for a book known as a classic. It was the perfect opportunity to revisit this world and see if it had weathered the times.
I was a little trepidatious, thinking it might seem too young for me or might even ruin the memories I had of the book. However, I can honestly say I enjoyed reading this so much. It has undoubtedly remained readable and enjoyable. It didn’t seem too simplistic, and I felt utterly engaged with the characters and their adventures regardless of their ages.
As my husband remembered, there were some really hairy moments where if I’d been a child reading this, I might have been quite scared. There was lots of apprehension, a few dodgy characters and some seemingly impossible situations. However, the children and the inhabitants of the Faraway Tree always manage to come good. The solutions they find do seem very implausible but were lighthearted and enjoyable to read.
I’m so glad I revisited this work, and I am tempted to read the other three books in the series when I get a chance. This really has won against the test of time, and I will be recommending it to my nieces in a few years as I think they will absolutely love the books too!
