With the help of forensic anthropologist Sophia Hudson, and the extraordinary young Elliott Carter, Detective Sarah Noble gets to the bottom of a cold case that refuses to stay in the past. Will she survive the secrets of the bone house?
My Thoughts:
The Bone House by Caroline Mitchell is the latest addition to the Detective Sergeant Sarah Noble series and is as creepy and thrilling as its predecessors. Once again, Slayton finds itself at the centre of weird goings-on, and I was excited to be back with these familiar characters. However, I must admit I had forgotten how morose Sarah Noble can be. Overall, I was enjoying the book, but the conclusion of the investigation let me down; it felt very anti-climatic. Sarah goes to a house because she had seen them collecting from a PO Box, which was a very thin thread to follow, and it didn't live up to the expectations that the previous twists and turns had set. The resolution felt rushed as if the author was just trying to get it over and done with so that they could get back to the drama of the main characters. The ending itself was dragged out, tying up loose ends for Sarah and her friends. This was a very disappointing end to what had been a great read and didn't deliver the same level of excitement and satisfaction as the rest of the book. However, despite the underwhelming ending, The Bone House is still a gripping read for the most part, and it was a good follow-on to the previous books in the series. It is well-written and engaging, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers on the edge of their seats.
