My Thoughts:

Angela Marsons' Play Dead kept me riveted from the very first page, once again showcasing her knack for crafting a nerve-jangling thriller that doesn't skimp on the macabre details. As a stalwart fan of her work, I find the vivid portrayals of the murder scenes to be precisely why her books are so compelling; Marsons is unapologetically bold in her storytelling.
In this instalment, the gritty realities of crime investigation are portrayed with stark clarity, thrusting us deep into the psyche of a twisted mind. Marsons' skill lies in her ability to make the grotesque almost palpable, creating a visceral reading experience that's not for the faint-hearted. This vividness keeps the pages turning rapidly, fuelled by a desperate need to uncover the next clue.
However, the conclusion of Play Dead felt somewhat precipitate, as if the narrative, so richly detailed in its build-up, had to rush towards closure. This is a recurring theme I've noticed in this series; the climaxes tend to arrive with less of the seismic impact one might expect after such tumultuous journeys. Nonetheless, the real enjoyment in Marsons' novels often lies in the chase rather than the catch, in the meticulous piecing together of the puzzle rather than the final picture it reveals.
For those unfamiliar with Marsons' work, prepare for a thrill ride replete with chilling detail. For the devoted following, this novel is another testament to Marsons' mastery in weaving tension and terror into the fabric of her narratives. While the ending may leave some readers wanting, the journey there is undeniably gripping.
