Official Blurb:

What would it take to make you intervene?
When Ella Longfield overhears two attractive young men flirting with teenage girls on a train, she thinks nothing of it—until she realises they are fresh out of prison and her maternal instinct is put on high alert. But just as she’s decided to call for help, something stops her. The next day, she wakes up to the news that one of the girls—beautiful, green-eyed Anna Ballard—has disappeared. A year later, Anna is still missing. Ella is wracked with guilt over what she failed to do, and she’s not the only one who can’t forget. Someone is sending her threatening letters—letters that make her fear for her life.
Then an anniversary appeal reveals that Anna’s friends and family might have something to hide. Anna’s best friend, Sarah, hasn’t been telling the whole truth about what really happened that night—and her parents have been keeping secrets of their own.
Someone knows where Anna is—and they’re not telling. But they are watching Ella.

My Thoughts:

I’ve thought and thought about what I would do if I’d been in Ella’s position and seen two vulnerable girls being ‘targeted’ by two men just out of jail. It’s such a tough one as I doubt you would even know until you were in that position. I certainly wouldn’t go to the extreme of tracking down their parents, that’s a bit too far. I wouldn’t speak to them or the men either in fear of verbal or physical abuse. I might seek out someone official on the railway line, pass the buck, so to speak. How many people actually interfere with other people’s lives these days?
I found the abuse Ella received as a result of being just a witness a little hard to bear. She didn’t have to come forward. She could have stayed silent and not put herself up for scrutiny. However, when she could, she eventually did the right thing.
The book moved at a great pace; you felt the fear for Ella as the threats she was receiving were very subtle but very real. There were so many secrets in everyone else’s lives the story could have been going anywhere, ‘you disgust me, dad’.
I certainly didn’t see the ending coming, and it completely sideswiped me. Brilliantly done! The book gripped me, and I couldn’t let it go until I’d finished as I needed to find out what had happened to Anna, what was Sarah hiding?
I have another Teresa Driscoll book in my NetGalley pile to read, and I’m really looking forward to reading that now after having read this brilliant book. I’d been seeing this all over Twitter for ages and been dying to read it so finally found the time, and I’m glad I did!
