Broken Falls Ranch... where broken hearts go to heal.
Just when I thought being wounded in action is the worst thing that could happen, my wife decides that she didn’t sign up for a life with an ex-Navy SEAL. So when my CO visits me in rehab and pitches me on a chance for a new start in the middle of Nowhere, Montana, the thought of big skies and rushing rivers is just what I need to reboot my life as a middle-aged bachelor.
Broken Falls Ranch sounds like a perfect fit for a broken-up, broken-hearted guy like me.
When Carissa Morrison comes to the ranch to help out the owner, old Freeze Buckley, she’s like a light shining through the darkness. She’s beautiful, strong and she’s determined to stand on her own. The chemistry between is like lightening. But just like those electric strikes, they illuminate everything that makes us wrong for each other.
Carissa is the most stubborn woman I have ever met. She’s also a terrible cook, in addition to being fresh off a horrible break-up of her own. Turns out she’s pretty broken too.
Old Freeze insists that Broken Falls is the place for vets like me to find ourselves again, but finding Carissa seems like just the thing to heal us both.

My Thoughts:

As much as it was lovely to revisit Broken Falls Ranch and see how Axel, Pris and Freeze were all getting on after we last left them, I didn’t think this book was up to Laney Powell’s usual standard.
There was a lot packed into such a short story, and I sometimes felt that the scenes were rushed and not developed to their full potential. It’s something I usually praise Laney on being able to do. She typically utilises the space she has perfectly and refines her story, making it feel like a full-blown novel. However, this was missing in this book. The beginning of the story escalated very quickly. I understand that she was setting the scene for Jenson and Carissa to both end up in Broken Falls. However, I felt like I had a bit of whiplash with all that was going on.
The characters were really lovely, and I took a liking to them straight away. I also sympathised to everything they were both going through. I understood them both wanting to be precautions and not jump into another relationship straight away.
I think the story needed to be simplified or the book slightly longer to give everything the traction it needed to play out fully. I really wanted to be able to emerge myself in the story, but it felt a little too disconnected. I wouldn’t have minded spending more time in this world and with these characters as the premise was a good one.
