Blink - K.L. Slater
Reading Challenge Category: Just wanted to read
What if the person you love most in the world was in terrible danger … because of you? Three years ago, Toni’s five-year-old daughter Evie disappeared after leaving school. The police have never been able to find her. There were no witnesses, no CCTV, no trace. But Toni believes her daughter is alive. And as she begins to silently piece together her memories, the full story of the past begins to reveal itself, and a devastating truth. Toni’s mind is trapped in a world of silence, her only chance to save herself is to manage the impossible. She must find a way to make herself heard. She must find her daughter.
Wow, I couldn’t put this down! It is so intriguing and a true Psychological Thriller. K.L. Slater certainly is the queen of this genre. She knows how to build suspicion on everyone in the book. You really don’t know what direction the book is going and are completely shocked by the outcomes! The first part consisting of ‘three years earlier’ chapters are interspersed with ‘the present’ whereby someone is paralysed from a stroke and is in hospital. This patient is telling you the story of what is currently happening; they are very much alive but trapped in their own useless body. The past chapters alternate between different people’s views of what is happening, and you are left wondering what is the truth and is Toni all that she is telling us? Is everything as it seems? I wanted to slap her for continually taking those tablets knowing how it was affecting her daughter. She made me quite mad. The second part of the book is set only in the present and again has different people’s perspectives. We have caught up on Toni’s past, and now we need to know what happened and what became of everyone. The writing of this book was very cleverly executed and like I say the twists at the end are superb and completely side-swiped me. Everything is explained and exposed. You are not left in the dark, but the book does end very abruptly. I turned the page expecting more, but it was over. A genuine five-star read and I’m so glad I’m finally getting around to reading some of K.L. Slater’s back catalogue. I think I only have three more to go!
